La Bouche
Perhaps some will be surprised, but La Bouche is a German team, like many other groups. Although there is nothing strange in this, since Germany in the 80s-90s was the undisputed leader in the production of dance music, and the names different projects were mostly not in German. And in general, perhaps even more surprising will be the fact that Mo-Do is an Italian team, not a German one, although many songs are performed in German...
La Bouche appeared in the early 90s, in fact, the name of this group is tightly connected with their first performers Melanie Thornton and D. Lane McCray Jr. and although this group performed not only dance music, but also pop and R&B. but the name of this group is inextricably linked with the dance culture of the 90s. and 2 of their greatest hits: ''Sweet Dreams'' and ''Be My Lover'' do not let you forget about it...
Both Melanie and Lane were Americans by origin, whose fate, due to various circumstances, led them to Germany, for example, Lane was generally born in Alaska, in Anchorage, and came to Germany serving in the American Air Force, which has many bases in Germany. Remaining in Germany, he began his musical career as a natural rapper (Cold Cut) and became relatively popular in the country.
Melanie was born in Charleston, PC. South Carolina (the name should be familiar at least from the novel ‘’ Gone with the Wind''), she started singing at the age of 6, learned to use it and dreamed of musical career. Having left for Europe, Melanie began to conquer her with her charming voice and charm, performing at concerts as a jazz and blues singer.
In the end, they were both brought in by the FMP Studios team, as it was their voices that appearance best suited the concept of a new project called La Bouche. And then on May 9, 1994, a bomb was released - the single ‘’Sweet Dreams’’, which immediately hit the majority charts European countries, and then the USA and begins to make its way to the first places, capturing which it does not leave for a very long time! The most surprising thing is that under the blow of Melanie Thornton, such a rebellious peak for many European dance teams as the USA, which basically stews in its own juice and rarely lets non-American performers into the first places, falls. On March 6, 1995, their second single was released (the American version came out a little later) ''Be My Lover'' and again it burst into the world charts, taking first place... both singles went gold, and after a massive attack on radio and television in July 1995 The first La Bouche album, ''Sweet Dreams'', was released in 2010, first in Europe and a little later in the USA, immediately reaching the top of the list of best-selling albums. The success was simply amazing, and again especially in the USA, which, as I wrote above, was a very difficult market for most European dance projects. At the end of the same super-successful year, their remix album ‘’All Mixed Up’’ was released. Then there was some silence, during which only the single ''Bolingo (Love Is In The Air)'' was released, and in October 1997 their new single ''You Won't Forget Me'' was released, and on November 17 of the same year new album‘’A Moment of Love’’ which included 9 new songs, 3 remixes of old ones, and of course 2 songs from previous singles.
Most of the tracks from the album are energetic, fast dance tunes!
In February 1999, the single ‘’S.O.S.’’ was released in Germany, which was 3rd in the album 1.5 years ago! In 2000, Melanie Thornton broke up with La Bouche and began a solo career. Vocalist Natascha Wright was invited to the group and in April 2000 the single ‘’All I Want’’ was released...

La Bouche

Germany in the eighties of the last century was a real European center, where a great many popular groups were born today. For example, the biography of the group La Bouche, whose name is very similar to French word, actually originated in Germany. The starting point of this group was 1989, when several performers decided in an original way declare yourself.

Why take so long to come up with a name for your team? You can simply take the first letters of the names of the group members:

  1. Melanie Thornton;
  2. D. Lane McCray (Jr).

The team created the first MP3 compositions in the style of R&B, pop, dance, and so on. good music education and understanding the needs of the audience of that era allowed it to quickly take high positions in the charts. Some music lovers even say that it was this group that personified the German dance culture of the nineties. A full-fledged discography of the group began to take shape with the release of two of their truly unforgettable hits: Sweet Dreams, Be My Lover.

The La Bouche team was distinguished not only by its constant musical experiments, but also by the origin of its members. Both members of the group were born on the American continent, but by the will of fate they ended up in Germany. Ironically, the geographical factor will interfere with the fate of the team many more times. Their first real hit, called Sweet dreams, began its ascent to the heights of the musical Olympus in the USA, and only then became recognizable in Germany.

Legendary '90s pop star and world-famous lead vocalist famous project LA BOUCHE Melanie Thornton would have celebrated her 49th birthday today.

BIOGRAPHY Melanie Thornton

Soloist Melanie Thornton, who largely ensured the success of Frank Farian's project LA BOUCHE, was born in May 1967 in the town of Charleston (South Carolina, USA). Melanie began singing at the age of 6, and also studied piano and clarinet. At the same time, she learned the basics of acting and dancing. The girl earned money for her college education with her talent, performing in various shows and as part of small musical groups. Melanie often visited the club "The Peacock Lounge". When a live band invited someone from the audience to join them in singing, she would go up on stage and have a jam session with the musicians, surprising the crowd with her beautiful voice. Melanie has long dreamed of a professional singing career. Her mother often listened to such artists as Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, The Temptations and many other Motown artists. So music surrounded the girl from an early age. It was the performers mentioned above that largely influenced the formation of Melanie’s vocal talent. She tried to imitate the performance style of her musical idols, watching their performances on television or listening to the radio. However, it is very difficult for young musicians who do not have any financial or promotional support to gain fame in America. Therefore, Melanie decided to accept the offer of her sister, who lived in Germany, to move to her and try her luck in Europe. “I sold all my property and car in order to fully pay off the loans. The remaining money was barely enough for a plane ticket,” Melanie recalled. On February 14, 1992, she stepped off the plane at Frankfurt Airport with only $15 in her pocket... But Melanie did not lose heart. She did not intend to remain dependent on her sister and her husband, “Uncle Bob” (that’s what relatives and friends called him), who settled her in their house. Already on the second day, Melanie got a job in Munich. “Uncle Bob” had good connections in the musical community, so within a short time he introduced his relative to a large number of familiar musicians.
At first, Melanie collaborated freelance with various groups, performing mainly jazz and blues. She did not shy away from any work. She had many meetings with little-known producers and musicians who were making music in cheap basement studios. Basically, it was work for one-time dance projects that disappeared as quickly as they appeared. But soon talk about Melanie's magnificent voice spread among more famous music producers. One day fate brought her together with two talented people. These were Uli Brenner and Amir Saraf, DJs and creators of fashionable dance mixes. Together with Melanie, they made several demo recordings, and then showed them to Frank Farian. The producer appreciated the vocalist’s potential and took the project under his wing. Further history the rise of LA BOUCHE is already well known.
Having become a celebrity, Melanie, after the end of her contract (1994-1999) with Frank Farian's company, decided to start a solo career. "I gradually grew up and improved in musically. As part of the dance project, it was already difficult for me to realize my ideas. Frank and I broke up good friends. I will always be grateful to him for what he did for me." Melanie said in an interview. She began a successful solo career on the X-cell Records label (a division of Sony Music), releasing several singles that became hits. Then followed release of her first album "Ready To Fly" ("Ready to Fly").
The album began to quickly move to high positions in the European charts. At the end of 2001, Melanie began a promotional tour in support of this CD. Everything turned out very well. Coca-Cola used one of the tracks from the new album to accompany videos for its Christmas advertising campaign, which brought Melanie additional fame. On November 24, 2001, the singer presented her new work in Leipzig. It was also recorded there last interview. “You never know what could happen to you tomorrow. So I try to live every day as if it were the last in my life,” Melanie told reporters. After that, she left for Berlin to fly from there to Zurich to promote "Ready To Fly" in Switzerland. The fatal Crossair flight LX3597 killed 24 people. The plane crashed while landing in unfavorable conditions weather conditions late in the evening of November 24, 2001. Together with Melanie, two soloists of the German pop trio Passion Fruit also died tragically. The third member of the group and 8 other passengers managed to survive...

BIOGRAPHY OF LA BOUCHE

The duet LA BOUCHE (translated from French as "MOUTH"), the original composition of which included Americans Melanie Thornton (Melanie Thornton) and D.Laine McCray Jr., (Lane McCray Jr.), became one of the most notable phenomena in pop music 90 -X. In the group's repertoire you can find compositions in the styles of POP, DANCE POP, R"n"B, EURODANCE... The diverse talents of the artists were revealed to the fullest when Melanie and Lane were invited to work together by Frank Farian's FMP team. Melanie Thornton recalled it this way: “When I arrived at FAR Studios, the producers asked me to sing something. I gathered my strength and gave them everything I was capable of. I performed the final chord with my mouth wide open to convey the full power of my voices. “Wow,” one of them said, “what a voice, what a MOUTH... Maybe that’s what we’ll call ours.” new project". It must be said that the name had not really been invented at that time, and for a long time FMP could not come to a consensus on this matter. My appearance in the studio became the catalyst thanks to which this name was born. In the end, everyone agreed on that the name should sound in French. It’s more piquant and euphonious.”
However, the project also required another participant who was supposed to perform rap parts. Melanie remembered her friend Lane (a former American military musician who remained after finishing his service in Germany). For some time they performed together in the group GROOVIN" AFFAIRS, and Melanie herself recommended the talented guy to FMP. Lane successfully passed the casting and his candidacy was approved. At that time, Melanie herself was already busy in the LE CLICK project, some tracks of which were also recorded at FMP (the creators of LE CLICK, in fact, showed Melanie Thornton to Farian).
When Farian decided to thoroughly engage in the LA BOUCHE project, it became absolutely clear that Melanie would make a choice in his favor and leave LE CLICK, since the first LA BOUCHE single “Sweet Dreams” showed outstanding results: No. 8 in Germany, No. 3 in Israel , No. 1 in Italy and Spain, No. 5 in Switzerland, entered the British TOP30 and rose to 13th place in the American Billboard HOT100, where it lasted for 33 weeks and reached gold status!
The next single “Be My Lover” (1995) becomes an even more impressive hit and shows the following results: No. 8 in Israel, No. 6 in the American Bollboard TOP100 (another “gold”!), No. 1 in Germany and Spain, entered the TOP10 in Holland, Austria and Belgium, reached No. 25 in Britain...
After a double "golden double" in Germany, success in the main music markets (Europe, USA, Canada) and massive support on radio and TV, followed by the release of LA BOUCHE's debut album "Sweet Dreams", which became a bestseller in America and made the FMP project new sensation 90s
In the US, "Sweet Dreams" goes double platinum after being successfully supported by two new video versions of "Sweet Dreams" and "Be My Lover", which were specially re-shot for distribution on American TV. Then followed new hit"Falling In Love" It was a remixed version from the debut album (produced by the American branch of FAR Music - AME, Florida), which, however, only went to radio DJs. It peaked at number 16 on the combined US radio chart. This new version turned out to be preferable for the Americans to the one performed in at a slow pace on the album. Buyers asked for the single in stores, but it never appeared on sale.
The next hit from the album was "I Love To Love", which reached number six in Australia. And finally, the collection of remixes "All Mixed Up" (1996) of the most famous hits became the final chord to the album "Sweet Dreams".
Then there was a big pause in the work of LA BOUCHE. Melanie described this period as follows: "Frank Farian had fairly tight control over the project. In addition to LA BOUCHE, he had many other artists who were recording in the studio on a certain schedule. We were placed in the category of minor priorities of FMP and waited for Frank to finish recording his new favorite group NO MERCY. However, during this period we still released a new single, “Bolingo,” which was supposed to precede the release of our next album, but the album itself was released much later. The main reason lay in Farian’s disagreements with the record. -labels. There was a struggle for power, which did not in the best possible way affected our project. The gap between the release of the single and the album was already too great." After some silence, in October 1997, LA BOUCHE released a new single, "You Won't Forget Me", and after it, on November 17, the long-awaited 3rd album was released "A Moment Of Love". It included 9 new songs, 3 remixes, and, of course, "Bolingo" and "You Won't Forget Me".
One of the songs was not completely new. "Mama Look (I Love Him)" was already released on the first European edition of "Sweet Dreams". However, on the American continent this thing was not yet known. Most of the tracks on the album are mid-tempo dance songs performed at a very high level. Later, in 1998, the single "A Moment Of Love" was released as additional support for the album. New job LA BOUCHE was not destined to become as successful in the USA as the previous one. And this is not surprising. The work turned out to be more focused on European listeners. Therefore, it was in Europe that sales of the album were quite successful. About a year later, another single was released in support of the album in the American market - "SOS".
In 2000, LA BOUCHE finally released new material. It was a great single, "All I Want". The soloist here was already Natasha Wright, who replaced Melanie Thornton.
By that time, Melanie was already busy solo career and moved from the BMG label to Sony Music. The new soloist of LA BOUCHE was not new to show business. Before joining FMP, she worked as a backing vocalist for MC Hammer, DJ Bobo and some other celebrities. She also had a number of her own Eurodance singles to her credit. Lane McCray did not leave the group and his rap continued to remain business card project. The new, 4th album was scheduled for release in September 2000, but this did not happen. And this despite the fact that all the material was recorded. The reasons lay in the conflict between Frank Farian and the management of the then BMG. The latter actually stopped promoting the new album to the market. There is information that Lane McCrae also recorded his own solo album, but this release was not carried out either. In November 2001, a tragic message spread around the world: the lead singer of LA BOUCHE, Melanie Thornton, died in a plane crash in the skies over Switzerland. She flew to Zurich to present her new solo album "Ready To Fly" ("Ready to Fly" - a mystical coincidence!). Fans of LA BOUCHE and Melanie Thornton were shocked. Lane and the FMP team also could not come to their senses from this news for a long time. Frank Farian and his production coordinator Ingrid "Millie" Segieth posted a special message about this on their website. In memory of the deceased Melanie, FMP decided to make a special release of previously unrealized material. At the beginning of 2002, a collection of her best songs was released (both as part of LA BOUCHE and solo), and on the anniversary of her death, a single was released with two great songs “In Your Life” and “Take Me 2” Heaven 2 Night" ("Take me to heaven this night"). These were unconditional hits! One can only wonder why such high-quality material was not published earlier. And if it weren’t for Melanie’s tragic death, then perhaps we would never have heard them. Fans couldn't hold back their tears...
At the beginning of 2003, having recovered from the shock, Lane McCray began a tour in support of this single along with new soloist Kayo Shekoni, who at one time replaced Melanie Thornton in the LE CLICK project. The artists tried very hard to support the LA BOUCHE brand and not lose its image. As a result, the single "In Your Life" reached number 9 on the American Billboard dance chart.
Currently, Lane McCray periodically performs on the club stage with a new soloist as LA BOUCHE, but Lane devotes most of his time to his solo projects. One of the works was presented at the largest international forum of the recording industry MIDEM in January 2007.
In October 2006, Sony BMG (since 2009 Sony Music Entertainment), which signed a contract with Farian's company MCI, released a remastered collection of LA BOUCHE, which included their best songs, and just six months later (March 2007) another re-release of this compilation was released in a different design.
In addition, several of the group's compositions were included in Frank Farian's musical DADDY COOL (2006). In April 2007, MCI/Sony BMG released a CD with the soundtrack of this great show, where LA BOUCHE hits were performed in updated versions.
In 2008-2011 new line-up LA BOUCHE has completed a number of fairly successful club tours around different countries. This time, the partner of the permanent participant of the project, Lane McCray, was the American singer Dana Rayne. On December 17, it is this composition of the duet that is scheduled to perform on the stage of the Olimpiysky sports complex as part of international festival RETRO FM.
