The main enemies of Doctor Who. Who is the Doctor fighting?

Doctor Who is the longest-running science fiction series in the world. On at the moment 37 seasons and more than 800 episodes were released (including all kinds of Christmas specials and feature film 1996).

Exciting adventures of the main characters, a talented balance between drama and science fiction, moderate comic plots, creative low-budget special effects, innovative use of electronic music and a thoughtful concept of the world with its own history and characters - this is why the series is loved all over the world.

When we talk about Doctor Who, we usually mean the last 10 seasons of the franchise. The classic series ended in 1989, and in 2005, the updated Doctor Who returned to the screens. From this moment on, the numbering of seasons was reset to zero, and the plot was built in such a way that you can watch it without even knowing the backstory.

Who is the Doctor?

The Doctor is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor's real name is unknown, and the very answer to this question could threaten the existence of the Universe. The Doctor is called upon to save humanity from alien enemies. For the sake of this good goal, he is always ready to sacrifice himself. On the verge of death, the Doctor regenerates, turning into a completely new character with a different appearance, consciousness and character.

Who accompanies the Doctor on his travels?

From season to season, faithful companions help the main character defeat his enemies. Most often these are cute young girls, but sometimes there are also men and even robot dogs. In the classic series, the Doctor was devoid of human instincts, so love lines in the series between him and his companion, as a rule, did not arise. However, after the relaunch, some girls fell in love with the young-looking reincarnations of the Doctor, and he reciprocated their feelings.

What is a TARDIS?

TARDIS is a machine for moving through time and space. She knows how to adapt to environment and take the most inconspicuous form. But the Doctor's TARDIS is broken and always looks like an old British police box. This is the main transport of the Doctor and his companions and one of the main symbols of the franchise.

Who is the Doctor fighting?

In his travels, the Doctor constantly encounters various aggressive aliens. But there are also main enemies, battles with which take place in almost every season.

Daleks

Enemies human race, self-learning and very dangerous. Captured by the idea of destroying everything and everyone.

Cybermen

People encased in a metal shell and completely devoid of human emotions. They strive to turn all living things into cybernetic.

Master

In the distant past - best friend Doctors from the planet Gallifrey. In the present, he is his worst enemy, although sometimes he tries to take the path of correction. The Master is another time lord who also regenerates when near death.

Are the series related to each other?

Bad Wolf - story arc of the first season of Doctor Who

Most often, each episode tells about a separate adventure, sometimes 2-3 episodes are combined into a common plot. But, as a rule, there is an overall “arc” within each season. The characters encounter the mention of some character or phenomenon, and the meaning of this leitmotif is revealed in the last episodes of the season.

In what order should I watch the series?

It is recommended to start watching with 10 seasons of modern Doctor Who in chronological order. Don't forget about the special episodes leading up to each season. It has already become traditional to broadcast the Christmas episode between seasons. You should not ignore additional episodes that are related to the plot, reveal the mysteries of previous seasons, or precede the first episode of the next one.

If you've watched every episode of modern Doctor Who, get started on the classic series. Try starting with the first season in 1963. If you haven't appreciated 1960s filmmaking, move on to Season 12. By 1974, the picture became color, and the quality improved. The Fourth Doctor, played by Tom Baker, is considered the best classic Doctor, and several seasons were written by Douglas Adams, author of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series of novels.

What makes the Ninth Doctor memorable?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor:
  • Satellites: Rose Tyler, Adam Mitchell, Jack Harkness.
  • Favorite phrase: Fantastic!
  • Season: 1.

A characteristic feature of the Ninth Doctor is sentimentality. Shown in the first season rare case, when the Doctor goes along with his companion and allows her to see her dead father. The Ninth Doctor is in no hurry to get involved in battle himself, preferring to motivate his companions to do so, which in no way speaks of his cowardice. The first of the Doctors whose hair was very short, and whose style was laconic: trousers, a jacket, heavy boots and no bright accessories.

And the tenth?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor:
  • Satellites: Rose Tyler, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Jack Harkness.
  • Favorite phrase: Molto bene, Allons-y!
  • Season: 2–4.

The Tenth Doctor appears to the viewer as talkative, good-natured, witty and daring, but he becomes more serious when meeting enemies. Despite his outward carefree nature, the Doctor is deeply lonely at heart. He suffers from the thought that his companions will sooner or later leave him. In addition, the charming character began an affair with his companion Rose Tyler.

David Tennat recognized best performer Doctor roles since Tom Baker. He played this role for three seasons, and then starred in several more global specials.

What surprised the Eleventh Doctor?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor:
  • Satellites: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Clara Oswald.
  • Favorite phrase: Geronimo!
  • Season: 5–7.

With the arrival of the Eleventh Doctor, the series changed showrunner. The main writer of Doctor Who was Steven Moffat (""). In the new version, the character is similar to the previous one. He is carefree, talkative, cheerful and cunning. But they added more funny antics and childish features to him. He also takes great care of his appearance: he strives to look good in front of his enemies, even if the fate of an entire planet hangs in the balance.

As part of the adventures of the Eleventh Doctor, the series celebrated its 50th anniversary. A special episode was released in which the Tenth Doctor, a previously unknown reincarnation of the War Doctor (John Hurt), appeared, and all previous performers of this role were mentioned.

What distinguished the twelfth Doctor?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor:
  • Companion: Clara Oswald, Bill Potts.
  • Season: 8–10.

The Twelfth Doctor was something of a return to the franchise's roots. At the time of the release of the eighth season, Peter Capaldi was 55 years old, as was the performer of the role of the first Doctor, William Hartnell, and his behavior often copies the third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee. There are also more “alien” features in the image of the Twelfth Doctor.

The Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, is focused and purposeful in his fight against his enemies. He doesn't care if those he saves consider him a hero. The seriousness of the character is also evidenced by the Twelfth Doctor's lack of a favorite catchphrase. The last tenth season of his adventures was declared a “soft reboot”, starting a new storyline to attract viewers to the screens.

What to expect from the new season?

The eleventh season of Doctor Who brings a lot of changes to the series. The Doctor regenerated into a woman (Jodie Whittaker) for the first time. This was to be expected since the previous season featured the first female Master. In addition, the new heroine will have three companions at once, which happened extremely rarely in the series.

Doctor Who also has a new showrunner. Steven Moffat, who helmed the series since 2010, has left his post. Chris Chibnall, who has already worked on the scripts for some episodes, is now in charge of production. He is known to the general public from the TV series Broadchurch.

What else to watch while waiting for the premiere?

The eleventh season of Doctor Who is expected to consist of 10 episodes plus a Christmas special. But in addition to the main series, there are several spin-offs that will help brighten up the wait for the continuation.

The series tells the story of events in the Cardiff branch of the fictional Torchwood Institute, which studies supernatural phenomena. Unlike its older companion, Torchwood has age restrictions and is not recommended for family viewing. By the way, main character series - Jack Harkness, who, as in Doctor Who, was played by John Barrowman.

A spin-off aimed at children and teenagers, telling the adventures of Sarah Jane Smith. Sarah is one of the most popular companions of the classic Doctor Who. Fans of the modern adaptation know her from the second and fourth seasons, where she appeared in several episodes. The Doctor himself visited The Sarah Jane Adventures about once a season.

A spin-off of Doctor Who, filmed in the genre of youth science fiction and telling about the events taking place at Coal Hill Academy. A kind of cameo - the appearance in the series of the twelfth Doctor played by Peter Capaldi.

Description of the Series : Doctor Who Doctor Who) is a cult British science fiction television series by the BBC about the mysterious alien time traveler known as the Doctor. Together with his companions, he explores time and space, simultaneously solving various problems and restoring justice.

Doctor Who is the longest-running science fiction series in the world and an important part of the British popular culture. It was praised for its imaginative storytelling, imaginative low-budget special effects and innovative use of electronic music (produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop). Elements of the series are known and recognizable not only by its fans. In the UK and countless other countries, Doctor Who became a cult favorite of television and influenced generations of British television writers, many of whom were long-time viewers. It received critical and public acclaim as one of the best British television programs and a BAFTA Award for Best TV series"in 2006.

The series originally ran from 1963 to 1989. In 1996, the television film Doctor Who was released, which was supposed to be the pilot episode of a sequel series, but poor ratings for the film in America canceled this plan. In 2005, the series was successfully renewed, and the numbering of seasons began all over again. There are also four spin-off series in the Doctor Who universe - Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, the only pilot episode of K-9 and Company and the Australian series K-9.

Currently, 11 actors have played the role of the Doctor. On 1 January 2010, the final episode aired with David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, and Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner as executive producers of the series. They were replaced by Matt Smith, Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger. The Doctor's new companion is played by Scottish actress Karen Gillan, who already appeared in the Fires of Pompeii series as one of the soothsayers.

The Doctor's identity has always been a mystery. All that is known from the early days of the series is that he is an eccentric alien traveler of great intelligence who fights injustice by traveling through time and space in his old time machine, called the TARDIS. The TARDIS is much larger on the inside than on the outside, looks like a 1960s British police box, and its name is an acronym for Time And Relative Dimension In Space (TARDIS).

Initially irritable and slightly sinister, the Doctor soon softened and became compassionate. Time Lords are known to have 13 lives. However, there are exceptions. For example, the overlord known as the Master had more lives. Following the conversion of all of the Doctor's reincarnations, there is a possibility that his thirteenth reincarnation may not be his last. Despite his outward changes, the Doctor always remains an incredibly curious and moral adventurer who would rather solve problems with his wit and sonic screwdriver than with violence.

Today we will talk about the Doctor's enemies. In fifty years, the Doctor has annoyed so many different creatures that it is enough to populate a small star system. Here is a list of the ten most terrible and most memorable enemies.

10. Sontarans

In tenth place are the militaristic clones from the planet Sontar. They look stupid, talk funny, and wage an eternal war with the Rutans. Rutans are amoeba werewolves from the planet Ruta III.

They first appeared in the first episode of the eleventh season, "Time Warrior". During their wars, the Sontarans were able to grow ten million clones every four minutes, which helped them maintain their warrior numbers despite massive losses. Sontarans are identical to each other, with only occasional variation occurring.

The Sontarans have advanced technology, but use it only for military purposes.

But it should be noted that not all of them are the Doctor's enemies. Sontaran medic Strax is friends with the Eleventh Doctor.

9. Autons

The first episode of the new seasons of the series shocked many newcomers who decided to watch the series with interesting name. Living mannequins are attacking London! But she didn’t scare seasoned fans of the series at all. They are called autons and first appeared much earlier. The newly regenerated Third Doctor fought the Autons and their mind-controlling Nestine in the episode "Spearhead from Space".

Nestin is a disembodied energy that can control plastic and desires world domination. The land is ideal for Nestine due to its pollution. Nestine entities are very ancient entities that appeared in the "Dark Ages" before the Time Lords. When the Time Lords gained power, they defeated the Nestine entities.

8. Zygons

These whispering creatures appeared on screen only a couple of times: the first time viewers could see them in the episode "Terror of the Zygons", and the second time in the double episode "The Pandorica Opens" and "The Big Bang".

They deserve special mention because they are the ones we will see as enemies in the upcoming “Day of the Doctor.”

Zygons first appeared in the eighties in Scotland. The head of UNIT summoned the Fourth Doctor to Scotland to understand the mysterious events. The Doctor and Sarah Jane encountered a crashed ship from the planet Zygor. The Zygons raised a special huge cyborg, Skarasen, who destroyed oil rigs and looked like a dinosaur-like monster. This monster lived on Loch Ness.

The Loch Ness Monster and sinister whispers earn Zygons eighth place on the list.

7. Time Lords

One cannot help but recall the Doctor’s native race – the Time Lords. Dada, as it turns out throughout the series, one of the Doctor’s main enemies is his own relatives.

The Doctor escaped from them when he was quite young. It is believed that the Time Lords do not interfere with the course of events, but at the same time they destroyed many civilizations. They fought the Daleks in the Last Great Time War and were destroyed by one of the Doctor's incarnations. We will soon learn more about this war, but for now seventh place goes to the Time Lords.

6. Great mind

Another incorporeal creature who wants to acquire a physical body and take over the Earth. The Mind first appeared in the second episode of the fifth season of the classic series The Abominable Snowmen.

Reason is a representative of the race of the Great Ancients (analogous to the Time Lords). Together with his people, he moved to a parallel Universe, from where he led the conquest of planets with the help of animals. To take over the Earth, he sent yetis to London, but they failed. The mind did not know that seals were enough to capture the Earth. Because of this, the Mind was kicked out of a parallel dimension, and now it wanders around our Universe, trying to take revenge on the Doctor.

For his zeal, we will give him sixth place. Try harder, Mind!

5. Silence

“On the fields of Trenzalore, when the Eleventh falls, when no creature can lie or be silent, a question will be asked, a Question that never should have been asked or answered.”

The religious order that Silence created, for a long time tried to destroy the Doctor. Silence has telekinesis, can release electrical charges from its long fingers, and can hibernate. Silence lives on many planets and has one very interesting property. When a person turns away from Silence, he forgets that he saw it. In the series, the characters put crosses on their hands when they saw her. Silence ruled humanity for centuries until the Doctor appeared and fought it.

For a beautiful prophecy and long fingers - fifth place.

4. Cybermen

The Doctor's next famous enemies are the Cybermen. They first appeared at the end of the fourth season and exhausted the First Doctor so much that he had to regenerate (“The Tenth Planet”). The Cybermen appeared on Earth's twin planet called Mondas. These were people who enclosed their brains in a metal shell. After the defeat in 1968 on Earth, the Cybermen spread throughout the Universe, but in the future they died out, having lost the war with people.

When the corridor opened between parallel worlds The Cybermen have begun to pose a threat again. But even then the Doctor and his brave companions were able to defeat them.

For buckets on heads - fourth place.

3. Weeping Angels

They first appeared in the episode “Don't Blink” and immediately became one of our favorite villains. Once you look at an angel, you should never look away. If you blink, the angel will come closer.

When the angel reaches his victim, the person is sent back in time with no way to return to his own time. The angel feeds on the energy of the life that a person could live. It's actually not as scary as it might seem. But angels can not only transport people into the past, but also wring their necks. You should not look into the eyes of a weeping angel because he can penetrate the mind of the beholder. The Doctor called angels the most terrible creatures created by evolution.

We will call angels very tough enemies of the Doctor and place them in third place on the list.

2. Master

Where would we be without him? In second place is the Master, one of the Doctor's most famous enemies. He first appeared in the episode "Terror of the Autons" and has since become a "returning enemy" of various incarnations of the Doctor. The sinister Master wants to either destroy the Universe or rule it. She and the Doctor were once friends, but their paths diverged on Gallifrey. There was a difficult relationship between the two of them. It seems that the Master wants to destroy the Doctor, but then suddenly begins to save him. Slashers see love between the Doctor and the Master and really want the two to be together.

1. Daleks

The Daleks deservedly take first place. They are not only the most famous enemies, but also the very first. The Doctor met them in the second episode of the first season of the old school series (The Daleks). By the way, in the first seasons the Daleks say their famous “EXTERMINATE!” not so often and not so fervently. The Daleks were created by Davros. Once upon a time, two humanoid races lived on the planet - the Kaleda teachers and the Tala warriors. There was a war between them for thousands of years. Davros, of the Kaled race, experimented with his compatriots and created new look– Daleks. The Daleks destroyed the Kaleds and most of the Thals by detonating a neutron bomb. The Thals were able to survive because they invented a cure for radiation sickness. At first, the Daleks could only live in one of the cities on the planet Skaro, but they still found a way to leave the city and spread throughout the Universe. The Daleks fought the Time Lords in the Last Great Time War.

This is what the list of the Doctor's enemies looks like according to the portal's editors. Who is your favorite Doctor Who villain? We published a large review on the site earlier.

When we talk about Doctor Who, we're usually talking about the final nine seasons of the franchise. The classic series ended in 1989, and in 2005 the updated Doctor Who returned to the screens.

Doctor

The Doctor is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor's real name is unknown, and the very answer to this question could threaten the existence of the universe. The Doctor is called upon to save humanity from alien enemies. For the sake of this good goal, he is always ready to sacrifice himself. On the verge of death, the Doctor regenerates, turning into a completely new character with a different appearance, consciousness and character.

From season to season, faithful companions help the main character escape his enemies. As a rule, these are cute young girls. The Doctor is devoid of human instincts, so he is not interested in carnal needs. Love lines in the series, between the Doctor and his companion, as a rule, do not arise.

The TARDIS is a machine in space that looks like an old British police box. This is the main transport of the Doctor and his companions and one of the main symbols of the franchise.

Enemies of the Doctor

These are the main enemies, battles with which take place in almost every season.

Daleks

Enemies of the human race, self-learning and very dangerous. Captured by the idea of destroying everything and everyone.

Cybermen

People encased in a metal shell and completely devoid of human emotions. They strive to turn all living things into cybernetic.

Master

In what order should I watch the series?

We recommend starting your viewing with the nine seasons of modern Doctor Who, in chronological order.

What makes the Ninth Doctor memorable?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor: Christopher Eccleston.
  • Satellites: Rose Tyler, Adam Mitchell, Jack Harkness.
  • Favorite phrase: Fantastic!
  • Season: 1.

A characteristic feature of the Ninth Doctor is sentimentality. In the first season, a rare case was demonstrated when the Doctor goes along with his companion and allows her to see her deceased father. The Ninth Doctor is in no hurry to get involved in battle himself, preferring to motivate his companions to do so, which in no way speaks of his cowardice. And the Tenth?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor: David Tennant.
  • Satellites: Rose Tyler, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Jack Harkness.
  • Favorite phrase: Molto bene, Allons-y!
  • Season: 2–4.

What surprised the Eleventh Doctor?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor: Matt Smith.
  • Satellites: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Clara Oswald.
  • Favorite phrase: Geronimo!
  • Season: 5–7.

The Eleventh Doctor is similar in character to the previous one. He is carefree, talkative, cheerful and cunning. The Doctor takes great care of his appearance: he strives to look good in front of his enemies, even if the fate of an entire planet hangs in the balance.

What distinguished the Twelfth Doctor?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor: Peter Capaldi.
  • Companion: Clara Oswald.
  • Season: 8–10.

The Twelfth Doctor was something of a return to the franchise's roots. At the time of the release of the eighth season, Peter Capaldi was 55 years old, as was William Hartnell, who played the First Doctor.

What to expect from the new season?

It is known that the tenth season will be the last, where in leading role Peter Capaldi will be involved, so we have to wait for the next regeneration. Interestingly, the mythology of the franchise suggests that the Doctor's essence supports 12 reincarnations (13 bodies), which means that the Thirteenth Doctor may be the last. However, the writers will probably come up with something, because fans are not ready to say goodbye to their favorite series.

The Doctor's new companion will be Bill, played by British actress Pearl Mackie. It is also known that this season will be Steven Moffat's last as the franchise's lead writer.
