This year marks 115 years since birth Soviet writer, playwright and screenwriter, laureate Stalin's second degree prizes Veniamin Aleksandrovich Kaverin(real name - Zilber). Veniamin Kaverin- author of about two dozen novels and stories, he wrote short stories, fairy tales, dramatic works, essays and literary articles.

The book was written over six years, from 1938 By 1944 year. Kaverin recalled that the creation of the novel “ Two captains"began with his meeting with a young geneticist Mikhail Lobashev in a sanatorium near Leningrad in the mid-thirties. “He was a man in whom ardor was combined with straightforwardness, and perseverance with an amazing definiteness of purpose,” the writer recalled. “He knew how to achieve success in any business.”

Lobashev told Kaverina about his childhood, the strange muteness in early years, orphanhood, homelessness, commune school in Tashkent and how he subsequently managed to enter university and become a scientist.

“This was the story of a boy who had a difficult childhood and who was raised by Soviet society - people who became family to him and supported the dream that burned in his ardent and fair heart from an early age.”(IN. Kaverin).

Another prototype of the main character was a military fighter pilot Samuil Klebano in, died heroically in 1942 year. He initiated the writer into the secrets of flying skill.

Captain image Ivan Lvovich Tatarinov recalls several historical analogies. IN 1912 three Russian polar expeditions set sail in the year: on the ship " St. Phocas"under the command of Georgy Sedov, on the schooner " St. Anne» under the leadership Georgy Brusilov and on the bot " Hercules"featuring Vladimir Rusanov.

Expedition on a schooner " St. Mary"in the novel actually repeats the travel dates and route" St. Anne's" Appearance, character and views of the captain Tatarinova makes him related to Georgy Sedov. Search for the expedition captain Tatarinova remind about the search for the expedition Rusanova. The fate of the navigator's character in the novel "St. Maria" by Ivan Klimov echoes the true fate of the navigator “Saint Anne” by Valerian Albanov.

By the way, the motto of the novel is the words “ Fight and search, find and not give up" - this is the final line from the textbook poem of Lord Tennyson "Ulysses". This line is also engraved on the cross in memory of lost expedition R. Scott to the South Pole, on the hill Observation.

Exactly for the novel “Two Captains” Veniamin Kaverin was awarded the Stalin Prize of the second degree in 1946.

The novel went through more than a hundred reprints, was translated into many foreign languages, and was filmed twice (1955 - director Vladimir Vengerov,1976 - director Evgeniy Karelov). In 2001, based on the novel, a musical was staged. Nord-Ost».

To the heroes of the novel " Two captains» in 1995 a monument was erected in hometown author, Pskov(published in a book called Ensk).

April 18, 2002 in the Pskov regional children's library the novel museum was opened Two captains».

In 2003, the main square of the city Polar Murmansk region is called the Square of Two Captains. It was from here that the expeditions set sail Vladimir Rusanov and Georgy Brusilov.

"My Captains"

Veniamin Kaverin I finished writing the book in 1944, and it reached me fifty years later. I was eleven, the book stood on the shelf, absolutely nondescript, without bright pictures, quite voluminous... I still don’t understand what prompted me to pick it up.

Most likely, it was not without instigation from my mother, who has always been my main “helmsman” in the sea of books. Be that as it may, at first I took the book with some doubt, I thought I’d leaf through it a little and close it. I started reading... and drowned, failed, disappeared. I don’t know how else to explain the state into which this novel plunged me.

No book has ever evoked such emotions and feelings in me: anger, resentment, compassion, joy, inspiration. The book was read quickly. I was literally stunned by the impressions and at the same time felt some kind of melancholy, emptiness, as if I had been deprived of something dear. And, without thinking twice, I took up the novel again, this time reading more thoughtfully, peering into the characters, analyzing the actions.

I don’t know how many times I’ve re-read “ Two captains”, but some phrases still clearly emerge in my memory: “The sticks must be popindicular”(writing lessons from Gaera Kulia), “I can’t bring the third lemon home.”(dearest Nina Kapitonovna I always dreamed of seeing you as my grandmother) “sick G., dumbness without deafness”, "Mongotimo Hawk's Claw", “I ask you one thing: don’t trust this man!”(phrase from captain's letter Tatarinova, which played a fatal role in the life of his family).

And of course I'm like Sanya Grigoriev, tried to memorize the navigator’s letters. Now almost everything has been forgotten, but I still remember the first lines: “Dear Maria Vasilievna! I hasten to inform you that Ivan Lvovich alive and well. Four months ago, in accordance with his instructions, I left the schooner, and thirteen crew members were with me...”

The characters in the book taught me patience and endurance, friendship and loyalty. But I also realized that in life there is cruelty and betrayal, hatred and envy. I was so amazed by the confrontation Sani Grigorieva And Mikhail Romashev ("Daisies"), that when we were first given the task at school to write an essay on any topic, I dedicated it to what worried me most at that time, calling my work “The story of friendship and betrayal in Veniamin Kaverin’s novel “Two Captains.”

I was frightened and repulsed by this very Chamomile, What frightened me was that meanness and bitterness could be hidden behind external decency and politeness. How I wanted to scream "Don't trust him!" when he told Katya about how he tried to save Sanya! And how I rejoiced while reading the scene of revelation Romashova! May the actor forgive me Yuri Bogatyrev, but I couldn’t get rid of a somewhat biased attitude towards him because of his undoubtedly brilliant performance of the role Daisies.

By the way, about the film. This year marks forty years since the premiere of the six-episode film directed by Evgenia Karelova « Two captains" For me personally, the film became the second gift after the book itself. In general, many reading people have a rather complicated relationship with film adaptations: very rarely the screen embodiment coincides with what they imagined and saw while reading this or that work.

But the film Evgenia Karelova became a rare exception for me, thereby hitting the nail on the head. This was what I wanted to see. Due to the fact that the film was shot in several episodes, it fairly fully reproduced the plot of the book. There were, of course, some differences, but for me they did not have much significance, and at one point I would have even been glad to keep the film version: unlike the book, in the film Sanya’s sister does not die after giving birth, but gives birth safely and leaves with little son to be evacuated.

And, of course, music plays a huge role in the film. the most talented composer Evgeniya Ptichkina. Overture and final song, written to the words of the director Evgenia Karelova, themselves evoke a whole range of emotions.

Not having the ability to download music from the Internet at that time, I placed a small tape recorder close to the TV “ Legend” and, having waited for the right moment, turned on the recording. The quality, of course, left much to be desired, but I was happy simply because, by pressing a button, I could listen again and again to the music that captivated me so much and called me somewhere; listen to the final song, in which the boy’s ringing voice seems to come from Sani Grigorieva sings such important words. Very often, at the same time, tears came to my eyes - these were tears of pride, admiration for people who are capable of Actions, who know how to be friends and know how to love, for whom duty and honor are not empty words.

Many years have passed since my first meeting with the two captains, but the book still occupies its rightful place on the bookshelf. Now it already has a somewhat worn and shabby appearance, but this is not my fault, I handled the book very carefully. It’s just that one day a classmate asked me to let her read it (it was assigned for the summer). I didn’t want to give the book away at all, but I also didn’t want to be branded a greedy person.

As a result, at the end of the summer the book was returned in terrible condition, with the binding torn off... and, most offensively, it was never read. The best use they found for it was to be a support for a frying pan. To say that I was upset is to say nothing. I cried over the ruined book from resentment and some incomprehensible feeling of guilt in front of it, as if I had not saved it.

They offered to replace it, buy a new, beautiful one. But I refused. This book may be old, shabby, with yellowed pages, but it is mine, dear, beloved. When I want to reread an episode, I know exactly what page it is on. And then, it seemed to me that having bought new book, I will betray the old one, I will offend her - then something will collapse, some subtle connections between me and the book will be severed. This is what I thought as a child, and even now my thoughts have not changed.

To this day they live next to me Sanya And Petka, Kate And Sasha, Ivan Ivanovich And Ivan Pavlovich, Nina Kapitonovna and aunt Dasha. They live and help in difficult moment because they are true, because they are real!

“Where were my captains going?
Look closely at the tracks of their sleighs in the dazzling white snow!
This is the rail track of science that looks forward.
Remember that there is nothing more beautiful
than this difficult path.
Remember that the most powerful forces of the soul are patience,
courage and love for your country, for your business"

Interesting facts about the novel by V.A. Kaverina "Two Captains"

The motto of the novel is the words “Struggle and seek, find and not give up” - this is the final line from the textbook poem “Ulysses” by the English poet Alfred Tennyson (in the original: To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield).

This line is also engraved on the cross in memory of Robert Scott's lost expedition to the South Pole, at the top of Observer Hill.

Veniamin Kaverin recalled that the creation of the novel “Two Captains” began with his meeting with the young geneticist Mikhail Lobashev, which took place in a sanatorium near Leningrad in the mid-thirties. “He was a man in whom ardor was combined with straightforwardness, and perseverance with an amazing definiteness of purpose,” the writer recalled. “He knew how to achieve success in any business.” Lobashev told Kaverin about his childhood, strange muteness in his early years, orphanhood, homelessness, a commune school in Tashkent, and how he later managed to enter the university and become a scientist.

And the story of Sanya Grigoriev reproduces in detail the biography of Mikhail Lobashev, later a famous geneticist, professor at Leningrad University. “Even such unusual details as the muteness of little Sanya were not invented by me,” the author admitted. “Almost all the circumstances of the life of this boy, then a young man and an adult, are preserved in “Two Captains.” But his childhood passed in the Middle Volga, school years– in Tashkent – places that I know relatively poorly. Therefore, I moved the scene to my hometown, calling it Enskom. It’s not for nothing that my fellow countrymen can easily guess the true name of the city in which Sanya Grigoriev was born and raised! My school years (last grades) passed in Moscow, and in my book I could draw the Moscow school of the early twenties with greater fidelity than the Tashkent school, which I did not have the opportunity to write from life.”

Another prototype of the main character was the military fighter pilot Samuil Yakovlevich Klebanov, who died heroically in 1942. He initiated the writer into the secrets of flying skill. From Klebanov’s biography, the writer took the story of the flight to the village of Vanokan: a blizzard suddenly began on the way, and a disaster was inevitable if the pilot had not used the method of securing the plane that he immediately invented.

The image of Captain Ivan Lvovich Tatarinov recalls several historical analogies. In 1912, three Russian polar expeditions set sail: on the ship “St. Foka" under the command of Georgy Sedov, on the schooner "St. Anna" under the leadership of Georgy Brusilov and on the Hercules boat with the participation of Vladimir Rusanov.

“For my “senior captain” I used the story of two brave conquerors Far North. From one I took a courageous and clear character, purity of thought, clarity of purpose - everything that distinguishes a person of great soul. It was Sedov. The other has the actual story of his journey. It was Brusilov. The drift of my "St. Mary" absolutely accurately repeats the drift of Brusilov's "St. Anna." The diary of navigator Klimov, given in my novel, is completely based on the diary of the navigator “St. Anna”, Albakov – one of the two surviving participants of this tragic expedition,” wrote Kaverin.

Despite the fact that the book was published during the heyday of the cult of personality and is generally designed in the heroic style of socialist realism, the name of Stalin is mentioned in the novel only once (in Chapter 8 of Part 10).

In 1995, a monument was erected to the heroes of the novel “Two Captains” in the author’s hometown, Pskov (depicted in the book called Ensk).

On April 18, 2002, a museum of the novel “Two Captains” was opened in the Pskov Regional Children's Library.

In 2003, the main square of the city of Polyarny, Murmansk region, was named the “Two Captains” Square. It was from here that the expeditions of Vladimir Rusanov and Georgy Brusilov set sail. In addition, it was in Polyarny that the final meeting of the main characters of the novel, Katya Tatarinova and Sanya Grigoriev, took place

To the 110th anniversary of the birth of V.A. Kaverina

When I was a ten-year-old boy, I read Veniamin Kaverin’s wonderful book “Two Captains.” And for the rest of my life I follow the principle of its main character, Sanya Grigoriev: “Fight and search, find and not give up!” It is very important to understand what you are fighting for.

Fazil Iskander called Kaverin’s “Two Captains” the “Three Musketeers” of our days.

Kaverin, V. Two captains: a novel / V. Kaverin. - M.: AST, 2005. - 624 p. – (World classics).

A novel for all times

Veniamin Kaverin's novel "Two Captains" is one of the most striking works of Russian adventure literature XX century This story about love and fidelity, courage and determination has not left either an adult or a young reader indifferent for many years.

The book was called "a novel of education," adventure novel", "an idyllic-sentimental novel", but they were not accused of self-deception. And the writer himself said that "this is a novel about justice and that it is more interesting (he said so!) to be honest and brave than to be a coward and a liar." And He also said that this is “a novel about the inevitability of truth.”

The motto of the heroes of “Two Captains” is “Fight and search, find and not give up!” More than one generation of those who adequately responded to all sorts of challenges of the time has grown up.

Fight and search, find and not give up. From English: That strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
Primary source - the poem “Ulysses” by the English poet Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892), 70 years old literary activity which is dedicated to valiant and happy heroes.
These lines were carved on the grave of polar explorer Robert Scott (1868-1912). Trying to reach the South Pole first, he nevertheless came second, three days after the Norwegian pioneer Roald Amundsen visited it. Robert Scott and his companions died on the way back.

In Russian, these words became popular after the publication of the novel “Two Captains” by Veniamin Kaverin (1902-1989). The main character of the novel, Sanya Grigoriev, who dreams of polar expeditions, makes these words the motto of his entire life.

Quoted as a phrase-symbol of loyalty to one’s goal and one’s principles.

“Fight” (including one’s own weaknesses) is the first task of a person. “To seek” means to have a humane goal in front of you. “To find” is to make a dream come true. And if there are new difficulties, then “don’t give up.” For half a century, chivalric morality contributed to the replenishment of the ranks of pilots, sailors, and polar explorers in the USSR. The charge of high morality and optimism that Kaverin’s heroes gave people was obvious.

The first volume of V. Kaverin's novel "Two Captains" was first published in 1938, the second volume was published in 1944. the book was published several hundred times; has been translated into more than 10 foreign languages; children and adults read it. In 1946, Kaverin was awarded the Stalin Prize for the book “Two Captains”.

Before the announcement of the award, there was a massive critical attack in the Soviet press on the author and his work, because in the book there is not a single word about the party, the Komsomol and the name of Stalin is never mentioned. What critics considered a drawback later turned out to be an undeniable advantage - readers loved the book so much that Kaverin himself began to fear that he would remain in history as a writer of one book.

The plot of the book is based on real events. The story of Sanya Grigoriev reproduces in detail the biography of Mikhail Lobashev, a famous geneticist and professor at Leningrad University. V. Kaverin met him in the mid-30s, and this meeting pushed the writer to create a book.

“He was a man,” he later recalled, “in whom ardor was combined with straightforwardness, and perseverance with an amazing definiteness of purpose. He knew how to achieve success in any matter, even a game of carom, which we were fond of then. A clear mind and capacity for deep feeling were visible in his every judgment.

Over the course of six evenings, he told me the story of his life - extraordinary, because it was full of extraordinary events, and at the same time similar to the lives of hundreds of others. Soviet people. I listened, then began to write down, and those forty or fifty pages that were then written down by me formed the basis of the novel “Two Captains” (Kaverin V. “Hello, brother. It’s very difficult to write...” (M., 1965), p. .238).

“Even such extraordinary details as the muteness of little Sanya were not invented by me,” the author admitted.

“When the first chapters were written, which tell about Sanya Grigoriev’s childhood in Ensk, it became clear to me that something extraordinary was about to happen in this small town - an incident, an event, a meeting. The novel was written in the late thirties, which brought Soviet country huge, breathtaking victories in the Arctic, and I realized that the “extraordinary” that I was looking for was the light of the Arctic stars, which accidentally fell into a small, abandoned city" (Kaverin V. “Hello, brother. It’s very difficult to write...” ( M., 1965), p. 240).

The image of Captain Tatarinov brings to mind several historical analogies at once. In 1912, three Russian polar expeditions set sail: one, on the ship "St. Foka", was led by Georgy Sedov; the second - Georgy Brusilov on the schooner "St. Anna", and the third, on the boat "Hercules", was led by Vladimir Rusanov. All three ended tragically: their leaders died, and only St. Phocas returned from the voyage. The expedition on the schooner "St. Maria" in the novel actually repeats the travel dates and route of the "St. Anna", but the appearance, character and views of Captain Tatarinov make him similar to Georgy Sedov.

“For my “senior captain” I used the story of two brave conquerors of the Far North. From one I took a courageous and clear character, purity of thought, clarity of purpose - everything that distinguishes a man of great soul. It was Sedov. Another has a fantastic story of his journey. It was Brusilov. The drift of my "St. Mary" absolutely accurately repeats the drift of Brusilov's "St. Anna." The diary of navigator Klimov, given in my novel, is completely based on the diary of the navigator “St. Anna" Albanov - one of the two surviving participants of this tragic expedition" (Kaverin V. "Hello, brother. It is very difficult to write..." (M., 1965), pp. 241, 242).

Another prototype of the main character was the military fighter pilot Samuil Klebanov, who died heroically in 1943. A talented pilot and a wonderful, pure person. It was he who initiated the writer into the secrets of flying skill. “I was proud of his friendship,” recalled V. A. Kaverin.

“Ask anyone, Kaverin is the author of what? And they will say: “Two captains.” This is a book of rare destiny. And no matter how long, to our joy, its author lived, we can safely say that it will outlive him by several lifetimes. They know “The Two Captains” by name, like “Tom Sawyer”, like “The Three Musketeers” - before they even remember the name of the author.

...The action unfolds like a spring. Short, enticing chapters, each of which promises a new turn in life, some event, some riddles. A most skillful construction! The very first paragraph sets the scene: a mail bag with soggy letters and a drowned postman. These letters, which have caught your secret curiosity, will appear again somewhere closer to the middle of the book and will lead the plot. Meanwhile, the action is rapidly unwinding, capturing new faces along the way, so that it is impossible to put the book aside...

Kaverin is a romantic by nature. But his youthful romance, I think, has nothing in common with pompous romanticism. Kaverin himself lives like a young man in his books, lives with expectation, hope, alluring mystery and a sense of honor.

The hero of “Two Captains” Sanya Grigoriev dedicated his entire life to restoring the name of Captain Tatarinov. a wonderful traveler whose name is not left on any geographical map because of meanness, because of ill will, because of non-recognition of his discovery. The plot of the novel is based on Sanya Grigoriev’s passionate desire to reach this truth, to restore this name. The return of trampled justice, the good name of a person - this is the highest feat, which Kaverin’s romance recognizes. And if romance can in some cases be a way of moving away from the truth, then it can also be a means of arriving at it.”

Kaverin recalled: “During Leningrad blockade The radio committee approached me with a request that I say a few words on behalf of Sanya Grigoriev, the hero of my novel “Two Captains.” I said: “But, excuse me, this is a semi-fictional character.” They replied: “Nothing, the guys believe that he is alive and well, say a few words on his behalf.” The situation at the front was very difficult, and on behalf of Sanya Grigoriev - literary hero– made a speech addressed to the Baltic Komsomol members. I would say, this is the bridge that literature throws into life.”

(Kaverin V. Teach with literature (Counselor, 1973, No. 1, p. 20).

In 1986, Kaverin admitted in an interview: “I am still amazed at the success of Two Captains, not considering this novel to be my best novel.”

Expedition "In the Footsteps of Two Captains" (2010)

About a unique Russian polar expedition. Her goal is to uncover the mystery of the death of the schooner “St. Anna”, whose captain was Georgy Brusilov. In August 1912, the ship set off along the Northern Sea Route. Of the entire team, only two survived. One of them is navigator Albanov, whose diaries became the basis for the famous “Two Captains” by Kaverin. As time shows, the motto of the hero of the novel Sanya Grigoriev is “Fight and search, find and not give up!” – follow the captains of the 21st century.

Sanya Grigoriev, main character the famous novel by Veniamin Kaverin, eventually found the remains of the polar expedition of Captain Tatarinov. This is what happened in “Two Captains” – the book and the film. But in fact, the secret of the schooner “St. Anna” and its crew, led by Lieutenant Georgy Brusilov, was revealed only in the summer of 2010, when a search expedition led by the honorary polar explorer Oleg Prodan visited Franz Josef Land.

Preparation for the search for traces of Brusilov’s team took five years: they studied archives, prepared to conduct historical, archaeological and other scientific research. All expenses - for equipment, arrangement and operation of the camp, as well as the work itself, with the exception of transport support - the researchers had to bear.

The expedition was a success. The remains and personal belongings of the Brusilov polar explorers who died on the Franz Josef Land archipelago back in 1914 have been found.

Maybe this was the last letter from one of the dead polar explorers? It is difficult to convey the feelings you experience when reading lines written almost 100 years ago...

Yes, there are not many luxurious exhibits here, there is not a wide variety of themes, but there is a special spirit. Burning theme! And it becomes a little pity that Kaverin’s novel practically fell out of school study, despite the fact that modern child there is a clear shortage goodies. No, this is not a longing for a bygone era, for one’s childhood, through which “Two Captains” ran like a red thread. It continues to be relevant and modern to this day, because the idea of goodness and the victory of justice have been and remain enduring values.

The museum of the novel “Two Captains” has been replenished with a truly unique exhibit, which lay for 68 years in the cockpit of the Soviet Il-2 aircraft shot down near Demyansk (Novgorod region) - the first volume of the pre-war edition (1940) of the novel “Two Captains”, which I read before its last flight deputy commander of the 2nd squadron of the 568th attack air regiment, Lieutenant Mikhail Gavrilov (pilot died on April 30, 1942).

In general, the fact that it has survived is, if not a miracle, then an amazing coincidence of circumstances. Even after drying, the volume clearly reeks of aviation diesel fuel. At the same time, the book lay in the hip pocket of the pilot’s flight suit along with another - “Combat Experience of Soviet Aviation.”

When examining the book, its new owners discovered that page 38 had been folded, as is done when a person is in a hurry. Perhaps it was at this point that Lieutenant Mikhail Gavrilov received the command to take off and in a hurry folded the page before last time take your plane into the sky. One can also assume that this book was his talisman, but the very fact that “Two Captains” helped him beat the enemy can be considered immutable.

“Two Captains” is not just a novel by the Russian Soviet classic Veniamin Kaverin, for several generations of our country it is a symbol of courage, honor, loyalty, knightly self-sacrifice in the name of a cherished goal, in the name of friendship and love. Needless to say, such concepts have become not very popular in our “commercial” days. And as if a challenge to businessmanship and tradesmanship, the testament of the “junior captain” Sanya Grigoriev, embodied in bronze, “Fight and seek, find and not give up,” a monument to the Two Captains (the authors are young St. Petersburg sculptors M. Belov and A. Ananyev) rose in ancient Pskov. The eldest, Captain Tatarinov, is very similar in sculpture to O. Yu. Schmidt, and the youngest, Sanya, is a slightly older boy from Pskov, named Ensk in Kaverin’s novel. (St. Zolottsev). This composition was approved by Kaverin himself.

Kaverin saw the sketch when he came to Pskov in 1986: they were celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Pskov male gymnasium (now school No. 1), where he studied future writer. Veniamin Aleksandrovich liked the sketch and later, in a letter to the rector of the Leningrad Repin Institute Pyotr Fomin, he wrote about the work of his students, young sculptors Mikhail Belov and Andrei Ananyev: “I can’t tell you that deep feeling the gratitude I feel when I think that my sixty years of persistent and, dare I say, honest work will be immortalized by such a priceless gift as a monument to the heroes of my novel...”

The writer was not destined to live to see the monument erected. Its opening took place in July 1995 - Sanya Grigoriev, rapidly moving forward towards a goal that was completely clear to him, and the romantic, sublime, raised on a pedestal Captain Tatarinov, very similar to the famous explorer of the North O. Schmidt, now greet city residents, museum visitors and readers every day libraries.

The bronze hand of Sanya Grigoriev sparkles from the touch of idle lovers of taking pictures with monuments, but also from the rare secret handshakes of those who share with the hero the ardent oath “Fight and search, find and not give up!”

In the spirit of once popular excursions to literary places, theater captains set off in the footsteps of Kaverin's heroes, polar pilots and explorers. Many “friends”, having met Zoshchenko on the street, crossed to the other side, but Zoshchenko and Kaverin had an old friendship and their relationship did not change after the Central Committee resolution.
