“The 25th anniversary of “Russian Seasons” is a 25-year journey, this is the brightest part of my life! – admits the artistic director of the group Nikolai Androsov. – It’s even difficult for me to say how many wonderful and significant creative events have happened in my life during this period! Huge number tours, performances, interesting creative meetings with outstanding cultural figures of our planet, filming films, productions in various genres, cities and theaters, absolutely happy years!”
According to Androsov, over the entire history of the dance group’s existence, a large number of dancers have been trained. “We are now raising the 4th generation of ensemble artists,” admits the artistic director. – They all come to the team from different cities and educational institutions, but we become part of our friendly family, part of our history and traditions, are becoming executors of more and more new projects and programs.”

Nikolai Androsov was born on October 30, 1963 in Moscow (Russia). From the age of seven he became interested in dancing.

In 1982, N. Androsov graduated from the choreographic school at the State Academic Ensemble folk dance of the USSR under the direction of I.A. Moiseev. Even before his graduation, in 1981, Nikolai was enrolled in the troupe of Igor Moiseev, where he spent the next ten years of his professional activity. As one of the leading dancers of the I. Moiseev Ensemble, he traveled to many countries of the world. In 1990, N. Androsov graduated with honors Russian Academy Theater Arts named after N.V. Lunacharsky (GITIS), specializing in director and choreographer.

In September 1991, Nikolai Androsov and a group of other dancers left I. Moiseev’s team and became one of the founders and initiators of the creation of a new dance troupe, which later became known as “Russian Seasons”. N. Androsov became the artistic director and chief choreographer of the dance ensemble and before today holds this position.

In addition, Nikolai Androsov works as a choreographer on the dramatic stage, in musicals, in films, and also with figure skating stars. “Where you were born, that’s where you came in handy”

- Nikolai Nikolaevich, how did fate bring you to choreography?

I don’t remember what I dreamed of as a child and who I wanted to become, but all my life, no matter what, I have been close to the theater and stage. My parents were completely far from art; they worked at one of the research institutes. However, at the time when I was born, it was very fashionable to send children to artistic clubs. My older brother, for example, became a vocalist and sang in the choir of the theater. Stanislavsky in Moscow, and I was sent to choreography.

You know, there was great respect for artists back then. It seemed that those who took the stage were some special people. Now everything has naturally adjusted itself a little towards commerce.

- It turns out that the parents’ decision is a tribute to fashion?

Not only that. Judging by their memories, as a child I danced almost around the clock! In the end, they decided to send me to a place where they would look after me and teach me the basics of what I love. So at the age of 6 I got into the choreographic Song and Dance Ensemble named after V.S. Loktev. Since then, theatre, stage, performances, concerts... With early childhood traveling around different countries, traveled all over the world.

I know that you still travel a lot and even bring little dolls to national clothes in yours already huge collection. What is the most dear place in the world to your heart?

Russia. This is my land, Motherland, no matter how pretentious it may sound. I had enough opportunities, for example, to live in America, where I was offered excellent prospects in creatively. I didn't want to. I'm just a different person. Some people dreamed of going there, and when the “curtain” opened, they did so. Many of my friends have lived in the USA for a long time. But I am always drawn home, wherever I am. Although there are a lot of beautiful places in the world, sometimes you even want to live in one of them for a while.

“Choreographic language is a score”

- What is the language of dance for you?

You correctly noted that this is a language. If you pay attention, choreography is a special and very powerful means of expression, and classical ballet is the pinnacle of this art. He creates a feeling of unreality on stage.

Dancing on her fingers, the ballerina turns from an ordinary girl into a magical fairy, or, conversely, into an evil fury. A vivid metamorphosis occurs through the language of choreography.

It happens that choreographers overuse this language a little, and then the dance overwhelms the music, the vocals, and everything else. It is important to feel in moderation. If this language is used correctly, it can have a very powerful impact. Especially if there is a gifted performer on stage. The movement synchronizes with the music and makes an incredible impression! You begin to understand that masculine and female body- divine and beautiful work...

- Do you allow the artists of your troupe or actors to improvise when you stage plays?

No, because our choreographic language implies exactly the same score as in an orchestra or for a vocalist. In a choreographic ensemble of classical ballet or folk stage genre, “notes” are the movement of the leg, arm, turn of the head, bending, lifting. If a person starts to improvise, he breaks this score to all his colleagues who are on stage with him. The dancer must be in the context of the ensemble.

The only exception is the solo number. In this case, the scheme that is offered to the artist for work, he can decorate with his talent. For example, do more pirouettes, make some jump or stretch stronger, introduce an element that the choreographer does great, but for some reason did not suggest. If you work in a team, you need to interact very precisely with other participants in the action.

I often say that for me, my partner is sometimes more important than myself. I must create a working situation for him so that he is as comfortable as possible. If he does the same in my direction, then it will be comfortable for both of us to dance.Improvisation is more musical term than choreographic, and that's not always a good idea.

“My troupe is almost a quarter of a century old!”

Why did you once decide to leave the troupe of the folk dance ensemble under the direction of Igor Moiseev and become a freelance choreographer?

I then graduated from GITIS and received other professions - stage director and choreographer. By this time, I had accumulated a significant amount of knowledge that I wanted to somehow implement. And in an ensemble you need to work a lot and constantly, perform daily duties that are not compatible with flights of fancy or some other goals. Working in a team and fully staging performances is almost impossible. Therefore, the decision was made to leave the troupe and engage in production activities.

After receiving your diploma, you created the dance ensemble “Russian Seasons”, which today is considered one of the leading groups in Russia. What were the difficulties of the path from obscurity to fame?

There were so many difficulties that it is impossible to list them. Sometimes I think: if I were now offered to educate new team, then I would not be able to repeat what I did then. I was 27 years old, my energy was overflowing, and besides, a large group of like-minded people helped me. Everything worked out.

I bow deeply to all those artists who, with wild enthusiasm, made my first concert program... We didn’t have premises then. Yes, we had nothing!

But we held an amazing debut program at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. There were sponsors and organizers who supported us. Now I remember it as something unreal.

- What important meetings, acquaintances, accidents, non-coincidences were there on the way to success?

There was a lot of all this. After all, my troupe is already 24 years old! I almost never did anything that wasn’t interesting. Over the years, we have created so many amazing things - real events in the culture of our country. For example, I am very grateful to Andris Liepe - in 1993 he invited us to restore the ballets of Mikhail Fokine and made the amazing film “The Return of the Firebird,” which is still popular and is sold on disc in all ballet stores in the world. And in the Washington Library it is presented as an example of Russian choreography for all times! For this, of course, it was worth working for. And it's not about money at all.

I always try to educate my artists in this spirit. When you try to make money, the money doesn't come. You need to become a high-level specialist, always think about art, understand what you are doing, and devote all your strength, capabilities and talents to it. Everything to do well. In this case financial issue will decide on its own.

-Have you stopped dancing?

No, I still dance in the group that I lead when we do special performances. Sorry, I'm not 5 or 17 years old now. The time has already come to think that it’s time not to go on stage. And I try not to come out as a dancer. This is a matter for the young. But when there is an opportunity to do something feasible, I dance. For example, the famous French composer Alain Simon asked me to be one of the pirates in a charity performance for children in December 2014, and I gladly agreed. He was an old fat pirate.

- If you once stand at the ballet barre, is it possible to move away from it?

For me - no. I work out every day. Because if you don’t do this, the muscles will become unusable and will not allow you to dance. Working out periodically is not an option. You need to do this all the time or quit altogether. You can't fool physics. The body requires constant work.

The famous Moscow ballet group “Russian Seasons” offers children a colorful performance to the music of Karen Khachaturian, familiar to everyone from the animated film of the same name. Once upon a time, the tale of the Italian communist Gianni Rodari about the onion boy was considered in the context of the struggle of the working class against the bourgeoisie. But time goes by forward, and today the production of Nikolai Androsov’s team turns this plot into a comedy-detective story told in the language of music and dance. The choreographer of the performance, Nikolai Androsov, demonstrates his original thinking and passion for experimentation in this ballet. Meanwhile, the plot outline of the ballet fully corresponds to the fairy tale by Gianni Rodari: Cipollino and Radish oppose the wayward Prince Lemon, the tyrant Signor Tomato and the Countesses Cherry and win.

Nikolai Androsov, a graduate of Igor Moiseev’s school, and now a world-famous choreographer, created the Russian Seasons ensemble in 1991, not afraid of comparison with the legendary ballet company of Sergei Diaghilev. And he passed it brilliantly. The ensemble's repertoire includes dances of the peoples of the world, extensive choreographic canvases, modern miniatures and unique ballets for children.
