Plot description

Kenai and Koda have just woken up from hibernation. Afterwards, they meet moose and bears, who talk about spring as a time of love. One day Kenai is tormented by dreams about his human life, in particular, dreams about the girl Nita, to whom he gave an amulet as a child. Nita is going to get married, but she can’t, because the amulet tied her to Kenai. During the ceremony, thunder roared: the great spirits reminded that the girl was not ready for the wedding. For the sake of marriage, these bonds must be destroyed. Until the moment of conversation with the shaman, Nita did not remember what was happening. On the way to the waterfall, where the amulet must be burned, Kenai and Nita become very close. After burning the amulet, Nita returns to the village. Koda, seeing that Kenai really fell in love with Nita, runs after the girl to the village. They're trying to kill him there local residents. Kenai saves Koda, but is on the verge of death himself. But Kenai is saved by his loyal moose friends. Atka was shocked that he tried to kill Nita's childhood friend and left. Nita confesses her love to Kenai and turns into a bear. Nita's father reacted favorably to the girl's choice. The film ends with Eskimo dances, where people and animals greet the young couple with the entire village. The moose also find the moose cows: Nita and Koda helped them get closer.

"Brother Bear"(English: Brother Bear) is the forty-fourth classic cartoon created by the Walt Disney Company and released on November 1, 2003. Brother Bear is the third and final animated film produced by Florida-based Walt Disney Feature Animation (the studio was closed in March 2004). It is also, to date, the penultimate classic Disney cartoon made in traditional 2D technology (in 2004, the studio temporarily abandoned traditional animation in favor of 3D animation). Former drummer and vocalist of the rock band Genesis Phil Collins acted as a composer, author and performer of songs for the cartoon.

The main motives of the cartoon are atonement for guilt, awareness of the sin committed and the knowledge of warm feelings through the transformation of a person into an animal. "Brother Bear" is the story of a hero who became a man by turning into a bear.

In 2006, a sequel to the cartoon, Brother Bear 2, was released on DVD, created by DisneyToon Studios.

Plot

Brothers Sitka, Denahi and Kenai - people living in times ice age. The tribe in which they live worships the spirits of totems - at a certain age, each person learns from the shaman of the tribe about his personal patron animal - a totem that embodies some spiritual quality, such as courage, wisdom or leadership. Young Kenai, the youngest of three brothers, receives a bear totem that represents love. Kenai is extremely dissatisfied with his totem, as he believes that love is a quality not inherent in a man. He becomes the object of Denahi's ridicule, but Sitka's older brother explains to the offended Kenai that the essence of the totem is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. Kenai cannot understand how a bear can personify love, because in his understanding, a bear is an insensitive and aggressive creature.

After the totem ceremony, Kenai discovers that the basket of fish he had prepared earlier for the ceremony has been stolen by a she-bear. Despite Sitka's entreaties, in a fit of rage he sets off in pursuit of the beast. Soon he discovers the bear's footprint. Frustrated, he gets into a fight with the bear and is defeated. Sitka and Denahi, who came to the rescue, try to distract the bear from their younger brother, but in the end all three find themselves trapped on the edge of an icy ledge. In an attempt to protect the brothers from an angry bear, Sitka provokes a glacier collapse and, together with the bear, falls into the river. The bear manages to escape, but Sitka remains forever buried under a block of ice.

Believing that the bear is to blame for the death of his older brother, Kenai sets off in a new pursuit of the beast. Denahi tries to dissuade him, but in vain. Kenai eventually catches up with the bear at the top of the mountain. After a short battle, Kenai manages to pierce the bear with a spear. The killing of the bear entails a chain of strange events, as a result of which Kenai turns into a young bear - a kind of punishment for the terrible act he committed. Having met Denahi, Kenai has to flee, as his brother mistakes him for the very bear that once killed Sitka. Kenai falls from a cliff into the river and, having reached the shore, falls unconscious...

The entire further narrative is told from the point of view of Kenai, who has transformed into a bear. When he wakes up in the morning, the first thing he discovers is that he can now understand the speech of animals, but people cannot understand his bear speech. Tanana, the shaman of the tribe, explains to Kenai that the spell can be lifted by visiting the mountain of spirits, “where the lights touch the earth.” Without further explanation, Tanana disappears, leaving Kenai alone with the forest.

After wandering around the thicket a little, Kenai meets two comical moose - Ratt and Tuke. Not finding common language with them, Kenai hurries away, but immediately falls into a trap. He is not able to get out of the trap alone, but by a lucky coincidence the lost bear cub Koda is nearby. Despite Kenai's displeasure at trying to feign independence, Koda helps him free himself from the trap. Meanwhile, obsessed with revenge, Denahi overtakes the two bears. Kenai tries in vain to convince his brother that he is not a bear, and as a result is forced to flee with Koda. For a while they hide in a melting glacier, and in the morning they set off - Koda is in a hurry to get to the spawning site, where he hopes to meet his mother, and Kenai - to the Mountain of Spirits.

After spending almost a day on the road and once again avoiding death at the hands of Denahi, Koda and Kenai reach the spawning site - the place of a kind of “pilgrimage” of the bears. Finding himself in a circle of new furry friends, Kenai finally stops seeing bears as enemies and killers and learns to enjoy life in the form of an animal. However, joy quickly gives way to shock when Kenai learns from Koda’s lips that the bear he killed was none other than Koda’s mother. Reluctantly, Kenai finds the strength to tell Koda about his terrible deed. Koda runs into the forest in tears, Kenai runs after him, but cannot find him and tells him: “I'm sorry, Koda. I'm so sorry." He goes to the mountain of spirits to meet Sitka and ask him to break the spell. Guided by the spirit of his deceased brother, Denahi also heads there.

At the top of the mountain, Kenai and Denahi begin to fight again, but Kenai does not want to harm his brother at all and asks Sitka to return him to his human form as quickly as possible. Soon Denahi begins to overpower Kenai, but Koda suddenly appears to save him from death. Furious, Denahi rushes after the bear cub, but Kenai takes the blow. At the same moment, a miracle occurs - the fires of spirits light up in the evening sky and at that moment winter gives way to spring and Sitka returns Kenai to its former appearance. Denahi realizes that he was trying to kill not just a bear, but his sibling, and throws the spear in horror. Thus, both brothers - Kenai and Denahi - realize their mistakes and begin to look at the world with new eyes.

Only Koda's fate remains unknown - left without his mother and without his close friend the bear, who has now turned into a human again, he does not know what to do. Kenai, who has fallen in love with the bear cub with all his heart and understood the power of his totem, takes a decisive step - he asks Sitka to return him the appearance of a bear.

Characters

Kenai

Kenai- an Eskimo teenager who dreams of becoming a man. He has a lively character, but Kenai is very kind at heart. After turning into a bear, Kenai takes care of a small bear cub, Code. Even though Kenai is quite cheerful, he is not very talkative.

Denahi

Denahi- The middle brother who constantly bullies Kenai. Despite the fact that his totem, a wolf, symbolizes wisdom, Denahi cannot be called calm and too smart (only with age did he begin to live up to his totem, and also became Tanana's successor). He hunts well and skillfully weaves baskets. Unlike Kenai, Denahi first thinks and then acts, but being angry with the bear who took Denahi’s two brothers, he is going to take revenge. Therefore, it is difficult to imagine Denahi's reaction when he learns that Kenai has turned into a bear.

Sitka

Sitka- the older brother who constantly separates Kenai and Denahi. Sitka is the wisest, calmest and bravest of the brothers. He dies saving his brothers from an angry bear. Sitka's totem is an eagle (“showing the way”). Seeing that Kenai killed the bear, Sitka, appearing in the form of an eagle spirit, turns his brother into a bear. After death, Sitka travels in the form of an eagle.

Tanana

Tanana- Elder of the tribe where the Kenai, Denahi and Sitka live. Tanana is responsible for presenting totems to the residents. Every year this female shaman travels to the mountain where the spirits turn winter into spring. She knows many secrets and has knowledge in many different areas. Tanana helps Kenai find peace of mind in the form of a bear.

Code

Code - little bear, Kenai's companion in the form of a bear. Their first meeting occurs when Kenai falls into a bear trap. Koda helps him get out, and at the same time shows him the way to the rock where the spirits touch the ground. Koda is very cheerful and insanely talkative, along the way he tires Kenai with his talkativeness. Koda is very energetic and fast. Kenai promises to take care of Koda when he learns that he killed his mother.

Mom Codes

The name of this large bear is unknown. But, judging by Koda’s stories, she was a very caring, wise and loving mother. In the entire cartoon, she utters the only word - the name of her son. Unlike other bears shown in the cartoon, it looks like a real animal. Killed by Kenai, who mistakenly assumed that she was the one who killed his brother Sitka.

Rutt and Tuke

Two moose brothers. Rutt is more confident and cunning than his brother, but Tuke is more sensitive to danger. Both moose are cowards, and when they learned that they were being hunted, they joined Kenai in the hope that he would protect them from the hunter. Rutt and Tuke love to eat, especially young shoots.

Bucky

grizzly bear, best friend Koda, and then Kenai. At first only mentioned by Koda but later appears in last episode accompanying credits.

Tog

Powerful, large, thick bear from salmon spawning (Salmon Run). He is the king of all bears. Apparently, he is especially friendly with little Koda, although in fact in this cartoon all the bears are friends with each other. Tog seems like an experienced, seasoned bear. But Koda’s story about his mother’s contraction struck Toga.

Perfume

Supernatural powers that can turn a person into an animal. When a person or animal dies, it goes to the spirits. And only once a year living creature can see his loved ones. Spirits touch the ground only four times a year, changing the seasons.

Nita

Nita- the heroine of the second part of the cartoon. When Kenai was a little boy, he gave her an amulet. Then he stopped Nita from drowning when she fell through the ice. Since then she has been afraid of water. The amulet given by Kenai prevents Nita from marrying another person. Then she goes for help to the elder of her tribe, and she explains to Nita that she needs to burn the amulet. The Elder grants Nita the ability to speak bear language in order to understand Kenai. Nita has a very strong character, although she is very sensitive. She refuses to marry the hunter and turns into a bear.

Moose cows

The heroines of the second part of the cartoon become objects of adoration for Ratt and Tuke.

Artistic techniques

One of the features of the cartoon is the use of aspect ratio as artistic technique. Before Kenai's transformation into a bear, the cartoon is shown in 1.75:1 aspect ratio, and shortly after the transformation the aspect ratio changes to 2.35:1. At the same time, the style and color scheme change slightly - after the transformation, the world appears before the eyes of Kenai (and, accordingly, the viewer) in brighter, more earthy colors. These techniques are designed to show the differences in the perception of reality by a person and a bear.

  • The premiere of the cartoon took place on Saturday, November 1, as the distribution company considered that the Friday premiere could be unprofitable due to the coincidence of the premiere date with the Halloween celebration.
  • The actors who voice two comic characters Rutt and Tuke (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) previously played similar roles (brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie) in the sketch "The Great White North" for the Canadian television show Second City Television in the 80s.
  • Some of the characters' names are actually names of various localities and geographic features in Alaska and Canada. For example, Sitka and Kenai are the names of Alaskan cities, and Tanana is a tributary of the Yukon River.
  • Characters Rutt and Tuke in different times appeared in the trailer for Pixar's Finding Nemo, as well as in the blackout warning video mobile phones in the cinema hall.
  • Kenai's line "I don't care how you and Binky found the biggest shot in the world" did not exist in the script - the actor made a dubbing error, and Koda's response was improvised.
  • The songs "On My Way", "No Way Out" and "Welcome" were performed by Phil Collins in Italian, French, German and Spanish.
  • According to the original script, Kenai's companion was supposed to be Grizz, a huge adult bear similar to the sage bear Toga. However, this image could not convey the necessary emotional message to the viewer, and as a result, Grizz was replaced by Koda the bear.
  • The picture that Koda paints in one of the short episodes accompanying the final credits is Georges-Pierre Seurat's painting “Summer Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.”

Features of the Russian DVD edition

In the USA, the cartoon was published on two discs containing two versions of the cartoon:

  • Disc 1: aspect ratio 1.66:1.
  • Disc 2: dynamic aspect ratio - 1.75:1 and 2.35:1 (original theatrical format).

On Russian market, unlike the American one, in at the moment Only a single-disc edition of the cartoon, released by the Videoservice company, is presented. The first disc of a special American edition was chosen as the source material - thus, the domestic viewer is deprived of the opportunity to see the cartoon in its original form, reflecting the author's intention. Another consequence of reducing the number of disks from two to one is the absence of a significant part additional materials. Even collector's edition duology (“Brother Bear” and “Brother Bear 2”), released in early October 2006, does not include the original, theatrical version of the cartoon.

So, let's be honest I watched the cartoon “Brother Bear” as a child, and I rewatched it recently. Did I like this cartoon? Certainly! Is his story over? Without a doubt. Does it need a sequel? Well, actually ah, it already exists. Well, let's make do with what we have.

"Brother Bear 2: Moose on the Run" that cartoon, the meaning of which even the spirits themselves cannot explain. It seems to me that the idea for a sequel only came about because someone thought that drawing a two on a bear’s paw would be a good idea to put on a poster. I didn't expect the second part at all.

Initially, I didn’t want to compare it with the first part, but I realized that this was inevitable. Let me just say it briefly: if this cartoon weren't a sequel, it would be a masterpiece. And so, the first part exists. Would I say that the sequel was worse because of this? Let's figure it out.

Firstly, it would be worth noting that the film has both disadvantages and advantages over the original. First, most important, Kinay is no longer stupid! I wrote a review of the first part, where I detailed my thoughts on this matter. The second plus of the sequel is the greater variety of the plot. The creators managed to write a second storyline for moose no matter what, there is still a benefit from it.

Now, moving according to the scenario, let's move on to some disadvantages. The first and most important love affairs. Fortunately, Disney was able to convey this not as in Russian TV series, but in its own way, and it doesn’t hurt the brain so much. Still, without them there would be no plot, no matter how you look at it. However, the snot in Disney style along the lines of “I love someone else, but it so happened that during our journey we became closer” or “You will only be happy as a person, but I myself will be able to somehow get by” are present here. The second minus is the far-fetched plot problems. For example, it is not clear why Nita is afraid of water? No, no, the answer “Psychological trauma” does not suit me, because what psychological trauma? Yes, she almost drowned, but already at a conscious age, and besides, she somehow too much afraid of water. And this is just one example. What I'm not happy with yet is how the sequel copies the original. Firstly, they again Kinaya and Koda quarrel. And if these were ordinary brotherly snot but no this real drama about the fact that Kinai wants to be human again. They even gave almost the same goal to the heroes. What was there in the first part, did Kinay have to come to a certain mountain? Okay, what's going on here? The heroes need to come to a certain mountain I see. I wasn't entirely happy with the ending: I thought it was too far-fetched.

However, the film has a different director, and somehow it became very close in soul to the first film. This makes me happy. He really doesn't forget about the original. But it’s not clear: where is the shaman, instead of whom some completely left-wing character was added? Why couldn't they use the shaman from the original? She's cooler! Or is this another village? Ay, okay…

Subsequent benefits. There is humor in the film, when, as in the first part, I did not notice it. Disney continues to use songs, but this time instead of building character relationships, they develop them. Finally, there are no more annoying or pointless scenes and characters. The cartoon follows the plot, almost without turning anywhere (imitating the first one).

Note that I listed the pros and cons in “jumps” from one to another, and this is not just like that, because that’s exactly how I saw the cartoon: unstable. Overall, I was pleased with the sequel. Again, the ending could have been done better and then I remembered the wonderful shot at the end, when the spirits change the drawings of people into drawings of bears (whoever watched it will understand).
